Write Winning Blog Posts

I have a friend who is into health foods, healthy eating, and healthy cooking. She’s an incredible fountain of information, and she loves having the opportunity to share her knowledge. However, when she sits down and tries to write a blog post, she freezes up. Nothing ever gets down on paper.

This isn’t an unusual problem. In fact, you may have encountered the same experience.

So here are a couple of techniques that you might find helpful in writing your blog posts. The first one, and I’m sure you’ve heard this before, is to write in your natural voice, as if you were writing a letter to a good friend. You don’t have to wax poetic to write a blog post. You just have to be yourself and say what you have to say.

The second technique: just write. Just get the words on paper (or screen). Don’t edit them. Don’t struggle to find the right word. Just put the words down without trying to out think yourself.

The third technique: put the post away for a few hours, or a day, or even longer if you’d like. Once you’ve finished writing your post, give it a little breathing space before you jump in and start changing things. By giving yourself just a few hours away from it, you’ll have a much better sense of what works and what doesn’t when you return to the post.

The fourth technique: write an interesting headline, and write it before you write your post. What you want in your headline (we aren’t talking SEO here, just straightforward blog posts) is a line that will spark enough interest to keep people reading. That’s all. It doesn’t have to be the best headline ever written. It doesn’t have to make a sale. It just has to spark interest.

The fifth technique: write more than one blog post at a time. If you want to post to your blog every day this week, write seven blog posts in one sitting. This is far more efficient than starting the process over every day. More important, you’ll find that when you write multiple posts at a time, not only will you get better at writing them, the process will become easier and easier for you.

Don’t let writing a blog post intimidate you. Just be yourself. People will read if you provide the information they want, and they’ll happily come back when they realize you’re a real person, writing honestly from a position of knowledge.

So go get started.
