Using Web Audio The Right Way

I’ve been toying around with a little audio on the website. It’s not up yet, but I hope to have it up soon.

Why? Because it’ll help me add a little personality to the site, as well as making it more interesting for you. At least that’s my hope. Not that there’s anything wrong with text and graphics. It’s just that we live in a world that’s geared toward visual and audio stimuli. People respond better to what they hear than to what they read.

The program I’ve been playing around with is called Flash Audio Wizard (or Easy Audio Wiard, they can’t seem to make up their minds). It’s an easy program to use and works wonderfully. Even so, there are a mess of mistakes I’ve made.

So I thought I’d share a few of them with you. Maybe save you from making the same mistakes yourself.

Right off the bat, I had no idea what to say. I was toying around, but even so, I really needed to have something specific to talk about. Whether it was just a welcoming message or an actual podcast, I quickly realized I needed a topic and a script. Believe me, it makes all the difference in the world if you at least have an outline to follow.

My next challenge was my voice. This is why I haven’t put anything up on the site yet. My voice … I guess, I’m just not used to hearing it. Sounds alien to me. And not entirely pleasant. I know I have to get past this (it can’t be that bad), but it is taking some getting used to. I guess my advice here is to not to worry about sounding perfect. Just be yourself. Relax and talk as if you were chatting over the fence with a neighbor.

I did finally put a script together, by the way. And I went through it, and I suppose it wasn’t terrible. Though I still cringed more often than not. Anyway, I did a little reading about using audio on websites, and one piece of advice I came across for Internet marketers, which we all are here, was that audio should create a call to action.

Forgot that part when I wrote my scripts. So, I thought I’d mention it here.

If you’re going to be adding audio to your site, have a purpose in mind and actively encourage your listeners to take an action toward that purpose. Whether it’s to check out a new resource or purchase a new product, give them nudge to get them moving.

I’m sure I’ll learn more as I go along. I know I’ll make more mistakes. The Internet has turned me into a trial-and-error junkie. In the meantime, if audio interests you at all, go check out Flash Audio Wizard. You can get all the information you need from their website: Flash Audio Wizard. (See? A call to action. Why couldn’t I get that into my audio?)
