Product Creation – Part Ten
Okay, now we’re getting to a point where we’re ready to start fleshing out our product idea.
There are two approaches to doing this. The first is the tradition approach … you begin to outline and build a table of contents. The second is you write your salesletter first and build around that.
Let’s take a look at the traditional approach first.
You’ve got everything down on paper now. You can continue on paper or move to the computer, whichever is most comfortable for you. All you want to do in this step is organize what you’ve written down. You might have specific categories such as table of contents, salesletter, packaging ideas, sales funnel ideas, etc. Simply move appropriate items into their appropriate categories, then organize each category.
Don’t over think.
Don’t second guess.
Just organize what you have.
The table of contents essentially provides an outline for your ebook. So make a list, using what you’ve already written down and anything else that comes up, of all the sections and put them in order. If you aren’t sure you have everything that should be included, spend some time on Amazon.com looking at the table of contents of similar books. Or take a look at the salesletters of similar products in your niche, especially the bullet points, to help you flesh things out.
You don’t want to copy what you find, but you do want to model it.
Remember: you want your product to be better than what’s already on the market.
The second approach is to write the salesletter first. In this approach, you write the complete salesletter with all the selling points, bullet points, benefits and features, and use that information to form your table of contents. This works wonderfully well for some people, because they simply let their imaginations go and include everything they imagine their potential customer would want in the product.
Next, use your table of contents to start writing.
Take on one section at a time. You don’t have to do them in order. Work on any section that excites you.
You don’t even have to write the words. Try recording them if that’s easier for you.
The important thing at this stage is to be relaxed and be yourself. Don’t write or speak formally. Make it as if you’re leaning on the back fence, talking to your neighbor about the topic. The information is what your readers are after, the casual way you deliver it is what will keep them reading.
Next time we’ll talk about pricing.
