Choosing Your Membership Niche

Here are the two primary factors to consider when choosing a membership site niche: your passion about the topic, and the level of demand.

Following Your Passion

Unless you’re really passionate about the topic you choose to build your membership website around, you’re not going to be a happy camper. There are going to be ups and downs. If you want to make it through the downs, then it helps to be passionate about what you’re doing.

Does this mean you can’t start a membership site unless you’re passionate about the topic?

No.

You might be passionate about building membership sites. In addition, there’s no reason you can’t enlist the services of an expert on the topic to run the membership site for you. This could allow you to focus on driving traffic or on building other membership sites.

However, if you’re intent to build a single membership around a niche that interests you … having a passion for that niche will greatly increase your odds of success.

Is There Demand?

Even if you’re passionate about your niche, that doesn’t guarantee success. You need others who are passionate as well. If your passion is repairing old books and only a handful of people on the planet have any interest in repairing old books … you maybe have a niche that isn’t going to make you any money.

You need a niche that already has a following.

How do you know if it has a following? Well, one of the easiest ways is to simply spend some time at Amazon.com. Check out the book and magazine sections. Are there books or magazines on the topic? How well are they selling? What kind of comments are they drawing from readers?

You can also check eBay, run a Google search, and visit forums on your topic. If there’s no interest, you’ll have trouble finding forums where people are regularly participating in the discussion. If there’s little or no interest, you’ll quickly start to feel like you’re alone on an island.

If that’s the case … go after another niche.

Remember: passion plus demand.
